Abstract
This study aims to analyze the roles, functions, and operational mechanisms of external accreditation bodies within Indonesia's higher education quality assurance system, focusing specifically on the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) and Independent Accreditation Agencies (LAM). A qualitative approach utilizing library research methods was employed. Data were gathered through in-depth literature reviews of primary and secondary sources, including scholarly journals, textbooks, and relevant regulations (such as those issued by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology). A descriptive-analytical technique was used to examine the complexities of the accreditation system from both theoretical and practical perspectives. To ensure validity and reliability, the researcher utilized source triangulation across various references to minimize information bias. The findings indicate that external accreditation bodies serve as catalysts for fostering a culture of quality within higher education institutions. The transformation of Indonesia's accreditation system now places greater emphasis on tangible performance outcomes, research productivity, and innovations that align with the needs of both industry and society. The accreditation systems administered by BAN-PT and the various LAMs have proven effective in encouraging institutions to conduct continuous self-evaluation and integrate global benchmarking into their institutional development processes. These findings imply that accreditation is not merely an administrative assessment tool but a strategic instrument for enhancing the competitiveness of higher education on the international stage. For higher education administrators, the results underscore the importance of strengthening internal quality assurance systems (SPMI) aligned with external standards to ensure the delivery of quality education that remains relevant amidst global dynamics.
